Immigration Arrangements Must Ensure Decent Work For All
“Unions will continue to advocate for a rights based approach to immigration that focuses on decent work for all workers – migrant or local,” CTU secretary Carol Beaumont said today.
“The government’s review of the Immigration Act is timely, and unions will continue to be involved in further discussion around immigration policy.”
“The use of short-term migrant labour to undermine the terms and conditions of workers who are resident in New Zealand, the treatment of migrant workers while they are in New Zealand and the failure to enforce labour laws on behalf migrant workers are key immigration issues for unions.”
“The CTU remains concerned about any delegation of decision-making powers to employers as third parties, given the significant vested interests employers have that may be contrary to the wider New Zealand interest.”
“Unions believe that a primary reason for current skill shortages is a lack of investment in training, and some employers who fail to offer acceptable pay and conditions that will attract workers residing in New Zealand.
“Migrant labour is often cited as a solution to these shortages, but in both cases it is a short-term solution that masks larger and longer-term issues in the labour market, including ensuring full employment in New Zealand,” Carol Beaumont said.
