Using your own mobile at varsity will be covered by University rules
From January 2007 The University of Auckland will bring into force a new Acceptable Use Policy and a revised Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Statute which covers all ICT use (whether on your own or on University equipment) on University sites or at University activities.
The new policies will cover privately owned ICT (and University owned ICT) and have been introduced to help ensure the integrity of the University network as well as the safety of students and staff.
Working with NetSafe – The Internet Safety Group, the University of Auckland has developed policy and statute so that staff and students are clear about their rights and responsibilities while using ICT at university.
Lee Chisholm, NetSafe Programmes Manager says “A vital component of ICT safety and security is having policies and procedures that clearly set out for all users the expectations and responsibilities of use.”
Any tertiary institution is vulnerable to infringements ranging from copyright breaches and plagiarism to harassment and illegal activity via ICT.
“We want to make it easy and clear for everyone to grasp the importance of using ICT in a safe and secure way, whether it’s downloading information for research purposes, or taking photos with your mobile phone,” says Lee.
A series of posters advertising the changes will be launched on campus in the New Year.
This programme complements and extends the work NetSafe has already undertaken in the compulsory school sector and now also with Early Childhood Services to educate all New Zealanders in safe and responsible ICT use.
