Still Too Many Drunks Driving
Police are focusing on drink driving and speed between the 27th of September and the 11th of November, as this has been
identified as a high-risk, serious injury and fatal crash period for Rodney District.
A Labour weekend anti drink-drive campaign in Rodney by Rodney Police, the specialist Traffic Alcohol Group, North Shore
and Waitakere Police and Highway Patrol saw 29 people detected driving with excess breath alcohol. Ten people elected to
have blood tests taken, which will determine whether or not they too will face court proceedings.
Operation Diffuse Phase 2 targeted drink drivers and as a result checkpoints were set up in various strategic positions
throughout the Rodney area. This phase of the operation commenced at 6am on Thursday the 19th October and concluded at
4am on Sunday 22nd of October.
During this period, 6046 vehicles were stopped. Fifteen drivers who tested positive for excess breath alcohol were
teenagers.
Fourteen vehicles were impounded and eight licences were suspended.
Eleven people were arrested for various offences including drugs, stolen vehicles and warrants.
Rodney Police are disappointed with the high number of drivers processed for drink driving, although the numbers
apprehended were slightly down on Phase 1 of Operation Diffuse.
Rodney Police will continue with this campaign targeting drink drivers in an effort to improve safety on our roads. All
motorists should take responsibility for their driving and be aware that Police are carrying out an anytime - anywhere
approach to enforcement.
