'Nuclear War With Iran' Public Talk by Larry Ross
In the face of the outrageous killing of Lebanese civilians, Palestinian injustice and pending war in the Middle East,
what is the role of Nuclear Free Peacemaking New Zealand?
AUCKLAND MEETING - 7:30pm Monday 9th October - Trades Hall, 147 Great North Rd., Grey Lynn
Titirangi Meeting- 7:30pm Tues. 10th Oct.-
Community House, South Titirangi Rd.,beside Titirangi Hall & Library
Leading researcher and veteran peace activist, Mr. Ross speaks about the threat of nuclear war on Iran. How will the
Bush neocons justify a war, even nuclear war, against Iran? Iran has no nuclear weapons, say the IAEA UN inspections,
but has a legal right to enrich uranium for electrical power generation under the NPT treaty. Iran is surrounded by US
bases, the US navy and Israel, who have thousands of nuclear weapons ready to launch.
However, Americans have been media-conditioned to fear and hate Iran, and believe all Bush’s false accusations to
justify any U.S. military actions. What can New Zealand do?

Specific Points considered
1)The importance of keeping New Zealand's nuclear free independence and peacemaking foreign policy. How easily we could
lose that asset, and it's present multiple benefits to New Zealand.
2) What a global nuclear war is and why many experts like Dr. Helen Caldicott think nuclear war is more likely with the
Bush Administration than it ever was before.
3) Why New Zealand is more likely to survive a nuclear war if we become a 'Red Cross' nation that helps and gives
medical and other aid to survivors of all races, creeds or nations - within our limited capabilities.
4) NZ has established a reputation for humanitarianism and impartial, skilled peacekeeping and peacemaking that is
appreciated and valued by the international community and the United Nations. This role can be expanded into new fields
to be more proactive in preventing any global nuclear war disaster.
5) Why we should not wait for nuclear disaster to strike, but take preventative action now. People and governments buy
all kinds of insurance and take many precautions against possible disasters - from fires to floods. But in the field of
a looming potential nuclear war, there is very little or no precautions. Let's explore why.
6) Governments spend many billions, even trillions of dollars on weapons and war making apparatus, but only a tiny
amount on war prevention and peace making. Very strangely, most people appear to accept or ignore the preparation for
nuclear war. What can we do to help stop this insanity?
7) New Zealand could again become a 'beacon of hope' of renewed diligent peacework in an increasingly threatened world.
We did it 20 years ago when we legislated to become a nuclear free zone in the face of nuclear super power opposition
that continues to this day. We can generate pro-active international peacemaking services, conflict anticipation and
prevention and conflict resolution. We could develop a far more sophisticated strategy for reducing and defusing
terrorism.
8) Global survival is at stake, so investment in peaceful justice and non-military solutions is the best form of
security and insurance. Spending more on sophisticated weapons and war making is not the answer for New Zealand or any
other nation that wants to ensure human survival, a healthy environment and a sustainable, peaceful world.
