Where is ANZ’s Corporate Social Responsibility?
Finsec, the finance workers’ union, is calling on ANZ bank to support New Zealand communities and workers by reviewing its decision to appoint a receiver to Feltex Carpets.
“We call on ANZ bank to demonstrate its corporate social responsibility and support New Zealand communities by ensuring Feltex Carpet workers have jobs to go to,” said Finsec Campaign Director Andrew Campbell
“A good corporate citizen should weigh its responsibilities to the community more carefully. Feltex is an iconic New Zealand company . Up to 850 New Zealand jobs could be lost if the company is placed in receivership. We believe ANZ bank should review its decision, taking into account the effect on New Zealand workers and their communities,” said Campbell.
“Corporate Social Responsibility is not just about good media spin and doing some public acts of charity. It applies in the good times and the difficult and ANZ should meet its responsibilities to the New Zealand community it operates in by ensuring these 850 workers and their families don’t end up on the dole queue” said Campbell.
“ANZ bank has made $803 million dollars off New Zealand in the nine months to June this year, so it can afford, if it chooses, to fund the one month of working capital needed by Feltex to allow shareholders to vote on the Turner brothers’ proposal,” said Campbell. “Hundreds of jobs are at stake.”
