NDU Wins First Step in Ending Youth Rates in Retail
The National Distribution Union has won the first stage in its campaign to win the elimination of youth rates in retail
today.
National Distribution Union National Secretary Laila Harre said that the announcement today by Postie Plus to eliminate
youth rates across all its Postie+, Arbuckles Manchester and Babycity stores was prompted by the union’s success in
eliminating youth rates from all Postie Plus shops in the Hawkes Bay.
“The union clearly indicated it was going to claim the elimination of youth rates in all remaining stores when it
initiated bargaining for a national agreement to be negotiated in July and the company has taken the step to do it now,”
she said. “The challenge for Postie Plus is to now move their retail staff off the minimum adult rate of pay.”
The announcement comes two weeks before the National Distribution Union launches its ShelfRespect.org supermarket pay
campaign which includes the abolition of youth rates.
“Once again this proves that only union members have the power to end youth rates” she said.
Negotiations with Progressives supermarkets begin on July the 11th.
