Unions Foster Debate on Nats's 90 Days Proposal – and the Response Is Clear, says CTU.
“The response at fleamarkets to National's 90 Days No Rights Bill was clear – people were opposed, and wanted to know
what they could do to stop the proposal,” said Carol Beaumont, CTU Secretary.
National's Wayne Mapp has called on the CTU to stop scaremongering over their proposed employment law amendment which
would remove workers' access to rights of appeal against unfair dismissal in the first 90 days on the job.
The CTU has launched a national campaign against National's Employment Relations (Probationary Employment) Amendment
Bill. This morning union activists talked with workers and the public at Porirua market in Wellington, and collected
signatures for a national postcard campaign to political parties that supported the Bill through to Select Committee.
“Unions are taking our role of educating and organising workers on this issue seriously,” said Carol Beaumont. “When
workers and members of the public find out what's at stake under National's proposal, they are in full agreement that
their basic rights at work should not be up for grabs.”
“Unions are absolutely concerned about those in the workforce who face disadvantage, and we support initiatives that
seek to invest in workers, not treat them as disposable.”
“If National wants to genuinely tackle the issue of employment opportunities for people currently excluded from work,
they need to invest in their skills not take away their rights,” said Carol Beaumont. “In case National hadn't noticed,
the key issue facing the labour market right now is how to attract workers with skills, not how to sack them.”
