Corrections Begins Recruiting Reintegration Caseworkers
Corrections has begun recruiting reintegration caseworkers to support enhanced reintegration services aimed at reducing
re-offending by helping prisoners prepare for their release from prison.
General Manager Integration Phil McCarthy says, “We are advertising nationally for 14 reintegration caseworkers to help
prisoners prepare for their reintegration into the community after release from prison.
“Around a quarter of prisoners are re-imprisoned within a year of their release. Research shows that prisoners who don’t
reintegrate well back into the community are more likely to re-offend.
“The new reintegration caseworkers will help reduce re-offending by addressing problems research shows are likely to
increase prisoners’ risk of re-offending on release. Common problems include accessing accommodation, finding
employment, managing relationships, accessing community support, and managing finances.”
Corrections received funding for 16 reintegration caseworkers in last year’s budget and is currently advertising for 14
positions throughout New Zealand: 3 servicing Northland Region Corrections Facility, Auckland Prison, and Auckland
Region Women's Corrections Facility; 2 servicing Waikeria Prison; 3 servicing Hawkes Bay Prison and Wanganui Prison; 3
servicing Rimutaka Prison, Wellington Prison and Arohata Prison; and 3 servicing Christchurch Prison, Christchurch
Women's Prison and Rolleston Prison.
They will be joined by a further two caseworkers next year in time for the opening of the Otago Region Corrections
Facility and the Spring Hill Corrections Facility.
