Red Cross accepting donations for Indonesian earthquake
New Zealand Red Cross is accepting donations for those affected by the devastating earthquake which struck Indonesia on
27 May.
All donations will be passed to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, which is appealing for
NZ$15.5 million to bring relief to the affected areas.
These funds will be used to support the Indonesian Red Cross in the provision of emergency relief services such as
shelter, food, water and sanitation, medical and first aid services, and other relief supplies.
New Zealanders can make donations by calling 0900 33 200 to make an automatic $20 donation, or online at
www.redcross.org.nz.
Three New Zealand Red Cross aid workers are currently working for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent in Indonesia. Relief delegate Malcolm Johnstone is currently working in the areas affected by the earthquake.
Peter Cameron, who is deputy head of delegation for Indonesia, and health delegate Janet Askew are located in Jakarta.
The Red Cross responded to the earthquake immediately by mobilising 400 local Red Cross volunteers and staff to assist
in disaster relief efforts. Volunteers are distributing food, bottled water, tents, tarpaulins and baby kits to the
affected population.
Five Indonesian Red Cross medical teams are already on the ground, and other medical teams, a field hospital and
emergency relief supplies are currently in transition to affected areas.
