Greenpeace accused of "passing off"
Greenpeace has now been accused of "passing off" the recently established website of the New Zealand Climate Science
Coalition.
"I never thought I'd see the day when a once proud international environmental organisation would stoop so low in an
attempt to divert attention from its own false message," said Owen McShane, of Kaiwaka, convenor of the establishment
committee of the coalition.
"Whereas yesterday we found that Greenpeace had registered our name under different suffixes that took internet users to
the Greenpeace website; today the copied domain name now links to a site called simply 'Climate Science' in a blatant
attempt to pass it off as the site this coalition has earlier registered.
"We can but wonder why Greenpeace has stooped this low, unless it is because they want to divert people from our
website, www.climatescience.org.nz, which debunks the claims Greenpeace and others are making about dire consequences of
so-called greenhouse emissions. We can only conclude that Greenpeace do not want the public to find out that these
claims are not supported by the science.
"For instance, many of their claims are not even supported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),
which states: 'The fact that the global mean temperature has increased since the late 19th century ... does not
necessarily mean that an anthropogenic effect ... has been identified. Climate has always varied ..... so the observed
changes may be natural. A more detailed analysis is required ..." (from IPCC Third Assessment Report 2001, 'The
scientific basis').
"We have no argument with this. But it's not what Greenpeace would have the public believe.
"Our coalition is led by scientists who have studied the facts of climate change. We are confident that, in the end, it
will be science that carries the day, not underhanded manoeuvring by the likes of Greenpeace," said Mr McShane
