Government Support for Manufacturing Praised
“It is pleasing to see the Government finally giving support to the productive sector of the New Zealand economy,” said
Maxine Gay, Secretary of the Clothing, Laundry and Allied Workers Union (CLAW).
Maxine Gay was responding to this morning’s announcement by Sue Bradford MP of an $11.5 million package to support the
Green Party initiated Buy Kiwi-Made programme.
“Too often it seems the Government acknowledges and praises the designers and marketers of New Zealand products but not
those who make them.
“The concept of “Buy Kiwi Made” also values manufacturing firms and workers: those who produce the products and generate
the wealth.
“I hope that the Buy Kiwi Made programme, together with the Government’s manufacturing plus strategy, will turn the tide
on the “don’t care where its made”ideology that seems to have permeated the economic policy framework in New Zealand.
“Manufacturing in New Zealand not only provides jobs but also ensures that New Zealand does not increase its import
dependency.
“The Government and the Greens are to be congratulated on this initiative, Maxine Gay concluded.
