TEAR Fund Addressing Famine in East Africa
TEAR Fund's Emergency Disaster Relief Specialist, Esther Ducai, is currently in the Horn of Africa assessing the hunger crisis and planning a strategic response to the worsening situation with international relief teams there. The United Nations estimates as many as 11 million people in East Africa are at risk of starvation due to the prolonged drought.
"Rain has begun falling, but it's too-little too-late to meet the current desperate need. Should the rains continue, the earliest harvest possible would not be until July. Our concern and focus is food security needs between now and then. It's a perilous situation for the millions there," says TEAR Fund Director Stephen Tollestrup.
TEAR Fund is accepting funds to assist its relief response. To donate, visit their website www.tearfund.org.nz or call 0800 800 777 or to make an instant $20 donation call 0900 90 777.
