Police to Attend Vehicle Theft Seminar

Police officers will be joining a diverse group of seminar attendees including forensic officers, insurance personnel,
vehicle inspectors, researchers and vehicle manufacturers at a Vehicle Theft Seminar starting next Monday 27 February in
Wellington.
The three day seminar is organised by the Australasian Branch of the International Association of Auto Theft
Investigators (IAATI).
"It is an excellent opportunity for Police staff to mix and learn from others with different knowledge and experience to
reduce vehicle crime," says Detective Inspector Win van der Velde, National Manger: National Bureau Investigative
Support.
"Police officers are the ones on the ground contending with vehicle theft - whether it is an opportunistic joy rider or
a sophisticated organised vehicle crime ring operation. Just like burglary, vehicle crime has a huge impact on the
people it affects - they are often traumatised and frustrated by the long winded and inconvenient process to remedy the
situation. The process can involve insurance accessors, panel beaters, glass companies and so on," says Detective
Inspector van der Velde.
The seminar sessions will cover vehicle theft investigation case studies, intelligence collection, forensic techniques,
current trends in transnational organised crime vehicle rings, registration initiatives, insurance practices and trends
in insurance fraud, crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), and vehicle accident reconstruction and many
other topics and case studies.
