Electoral Cheats Defy the Law
The Labour and National Parties have made a mockery of our democratic process by flagrantly abusing the intent of our
electoral law, according to Kerry Bevin, the political leader of The Republic of New Zealand Party (The Republicans)
“They cheated,” he said
Mr Bevin was referring to Labour’s over spending of $400,000 and the Brethrens campaign for the National Party.
Mr Bevin said that although the two major parties had found ways to circumvent the wording of the Act, there was no
doubt that they had flouted the intent of the law.
“This is not democracy the way it should be and defies the principle of equal opportunity for all voters.”
Mr Bevin said The Republicans await with interest the call made by the Electoral Commission and Police on this matter.
He said that the validity of the Election Results was now in question and the major parties should be prosecuted for
their abuse of the law.
“It is time New Zealanders insisted that the fundamental principles of democracy will be obeyed by the Prime Minister
and the Leader of the Opposition. Nobody is above the law.”
Mr Bevin said that Jerry Brownlees’ comment that Labour pays the money back is laughable. “Who are they going to pay it
to? The damage has been done already and both Labour and National are guilty,” he said.
