Passing of Coretta King and the Maxim Institute
It is again with a sense of irony that HappyClappingHomos notes the Maxim institutes tribute to a departed campaigner for tolerance and civil rights.
Over the last 12 months, the Institute has passed comment on Simon Wiesenthal, Rosa Parks and now Coretta Scott King. All off those individuals stood for equality of rights and an end to hatred based on discrimination and ignorance. Given the Institutes vehement opposition to any form of Gay rights, it is indeed perplexing that they honour the memory of Coretta Scott King. We are by now familiar with the murder of Mathew Shepard, the following sourced from the Mathew Shepard foundation is Coretta Scott Kings reaction to that tragic event.
“I was stunned and deeply saddened to learn of the killing of your beloved son, Matthew Shepard. On behalf of Dexter Scott King, The King Center and the King Center Family, I send our heartfelt condolences, our love and prayers for your family in your hour of bereavement.
Clearly, your Matthew was a fine young man, a kind and open-hearted person who believed in human rights and the dignity of all people. The outpouring of sympathy from his many friends, as well as his family, is a testament that he was a caring and much-loved human being, and his loss diminishes us all.
The epidemic brutality that took your son’s life and has caused so much pain to your family must be confronted and stopped. Americans of conscience must work a lot harder to eliminate this sick culture of violence that threatens even our best and brightest.
Matthew Shepard will be sorely missed. But we will be praying your family soon be unburdened by the knowledge that his beautiful spirit will live on in the hearts of all of those he touched.” (from the Matthew Shepard Foundation, www.matthewshepard.org/)
Clearly, such a reaction is not one that would sit well with the Maxim Institutes views on homosexuality. Given the Maxim Institutes stance that gay relationships are nothing more than an attempt to ‘Normalise’ homosexuality and that this will cause the breakdown of the family, the country and civilisation it seems rather odd that they would honour someone diametrically opposed to themselves.
We suggest the Institute once again takes a long hard look at itself, before attempting to align its narrow ideologies and score political points from the memory of a great and important woman.
