Families invited to help save the whales
Auckland, January 16, 2006: Greenpeace New Zealand will mark an international day of action on whaling today (Tuesday) with a family beach dig in Auckland.
Children are welcome to join Greenpeace members making a giant whale of sand on the beach at Mission Bay, while their parents are invited to “plant a whale tail” in the sand in tribute to the whales being slaughtered in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
The international day of action is to draw attention to the fact that people all over the world oppose the commercial hunting of whales, and is being marked in Japan, Australia, the United States, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Fiji, Argentina, Austria, Poland, Canada, India, Greece, Spain, Turkey and Sweden.
Greenpeace New Zealand whales campaigner Pia Mancia said that everyone was welcome to join in.
“We can’t all get on a ship and go to the Southern Ocean, but we can still do our bit to help save the whales,” she said.
The hour-long event starts at 10am at the eastern end of Mission Bay.
