NZ Kennel Club takes Northern Classic Show to Taupo
The NZ Kennel Club today announced that the Northern Classic Dog Show will be hosted by Taupo for the next five years
2006 - 2010.
“This is a fantastic announcement for dog people in the North Island and will be of significant economic benefit to
Taupo, with over 1,000 people expected to pack the town at Anzac weekend 2006,” said Lesley Chalmers, president of the
NZ Kennel Club.
The Northern Classic Dog Show is sponsored by Premier Exhibitions and has been secured by Taupo with the support of
Destination Lake Taupo.
The NZ Kennel Club is the organization of responsible dog owners. During 22 - 25 April 2006, Taupo will host four days
of pure-bred dog shows, obedience competitions, and agility events (think of TUX Wonder Dogs on TV.)
The Classic Dog Shows are second only in prestige to the National Dog Show and are being reinstated after a break of
seven years. The last Northern Classic was held in Auckland.
Taupo MP and Minister of Local Government Mark Burton is delighted at the news. "This is good news for Taupo which will
benefit from over a thousand visitors next April and for the next four years.
"It's also good news for good dog owners throughout the North Island. The Labour-led Government is encouraging people
who take seriously their responsibilities as dog owners and we want them to be able to enjoy the companionship of their
animals," said Mr Burton.
"Securing the event has been a collaborative effort between Destination Lake Taupo and Taupo Venues and we're thrilled
that the NZ Kennel Club is committing to holding the Northern Classic at Taupo for the next five years," said
Destination Lake Taupo's Warwick Hall. His agency is responsible for bringing events to the Taupo region, other recent
successes include the International Six Day Enduro and OXFAM Trailwalker.
"Now the dog world is bringing around 1,100 people to town. That will help keep Taupo booming," said Mr Hall
