Protests against new US Ambassador - one arrest!
The new US ambassador, William McCormick, was confronted this morning by anti-war protesters at Government House today where he was presenting his credentials to the Governer General. Fifteen anti-war protesters gathered at the entrance gate displaying a banner reading "Fuck off out of Aotearoa". Another group of activists also managed to get inside the huge garden and made their way up to the Government House with a banner saying "US terrorists out of Iraq". Eight Police turned up and as a paddy-wagon arrived the group of protesters decided to leave together. One person received a written tresspass notice from Government House.
One protester was arrested on Adelaide Rd. when walking into Newtown for using 'offensive' language at around 12:30pm.
"The U.S. Government is fighting imperialist wars in the Middle East. The profiteers are multinational companies who plunder the resources of the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr. McCormick, as a representative of the U.S. Government, is responsible for the daily suffering of the Iraqi people and we feel he is morally obliged to step down from his post." said Valerie Morse, member of Peace Action Wellington.
