Award winning photographer and writer, Canadian Philip Maher, is visiting New Zealand next week fresh from reporting on tsunami relief work in Indonesia.
Few people have seen the world as Philip Maher has. For nearly 25 years he has traveled to more than 80 countries on behalf of World Vision, telling the stories of those caught in disasters and war zones. He comes to New Zealand direct from reporting on tsunami relief work in Indonesia.
He has chronicled the reality of famines and wars in Somalia, Afghanistan, Southern Sudan, Northern Kenya, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Chad, Burundi, Rwanda, Bosnia and Albania – to name a few. He’s traveled to some of the World’s most restrictive countries, including Belarus (Chernobyl radioactive zone) and North Korea where he helped deliver medical supplies for children.
He has reported from floods and earthquakes in such places as Colombia, China, India, Turkey and Bangladesh. He was on an advance team, which re-entered East Timor after civil strife on that island.
“I’m simply a story teller, the eyes of those who cannot travel, the mouth of those who cannot speak. I’m humbled by the responsibility. It is a privilege to meet people who are financially poor but values rich,” says Philip.
Philip will be speaking to World Vision volunteers at conferences in Christchurch (28 –29 Oct), Waikato (5 – 6 Nov) and Wellington (12 –13 Nov).
