Funding approved for Tumai to Waikouaiti realignment of SH1
The Land Transport New Zealand Board has approved $7 million funding for realignment of the Tumai to Waikouaiti section of State Highway 1 north of Dunedin.
The funding will provide for a new alignment of SH1, to the west of the railway, which will eliminate two rail crossings and provide for a northbound passing lane.
Land Transport NZ Board chair Dr Jan Wright says this will address one of the worst sections of State Highway 1 in the South Island. It will reduce crashes and cut travel times, benefiting users of SH1 travelling through the region.
“Building safer roads is one of the ways we can reduce the number of crashes, alongside education and enforcement.”
