David Knight – Candidate for Hutt South
PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
13 August 2005
Destiny New Zealand Defines A Family
In response to a question asking candidates to define a family at a Lions’ sponsored ‘Meet The Candidate’ evening in Eastbourne last night, Destiny New Zealand candidate for Hutt South, David Knight outlined Destiny’s definition of a family.
“As per our manifesto, I believe a family is defined as a legally married husband (man born a male) and wife (woman born a female) and their children and/or legally adopted children - to at least the fourth generation. A family is built on unconditional love, commitment, honour, acceptance and support.” Mr Knight answered.
Mr Knight, raised in a sole parent family himself, adds, “it is our policy to ensure both financial and practical support for children in sole parent families. This assistance should be targeted at the children to ensure they are not further disadvantaged.”
Perhaps the most staggering answer to the question asking candidates to define a family was that given by Murray Smith, the candidate for United Future. Mr Smith was unable to define a family, saying it was very ‘complex’, but did say that he liked the definition of one of his United Future colleagues. According to Mr Smith a family could be defined as, “what you come home to.”
“There we have it,” says Mr Knight, “according to the United Future candidate two or more University students in the same flat constitute a family. A pensioner and their boarder constitute a family. It is no surprise that given United Future, the sponsors of the Families Commission can’t actually define a family, that the Families Commission after 3 years of existence, 2 CEO’s and $28m of tax payer funds, has had no real relevance.”
The meeting was attended by about 70 local residents, and was one of the livelier of the hard fought campaign for Hutt South.
