Students Upset at Personalised Labour Party Student Loan Policy Flier
The Locke Foundation is calling for the Labour Party to explain the origins of their student loan mailing list.
The Labour Party has been targeting students with loans by sending personally addressed election material promoting their student loan policy and telling the recipients to give Labour their party vote. Each personalised Labour flier appears to have been hand delivered, there were no postal marks on the ones we saw.
Students we spoke to were outraged that the Labour Party had managed to obtain such personal information as where they lived and whether they had a student loan. These students want to know how they made it onto the Labour Party’s mailing list without their consent and some have stated that they view it as an invasion of privacy.
The question has been asked by some students as to whether or not Labour have accessed private student loan records and deliberately targeted students with substantial loans only. The reasoning for this is that of those students contacted by the Locke Foundation who are registered on the electoral roll as students and who live in the same area, only those with substantial student loans have received Labour’s personalised election material. It appears that students with minimal student loans were not targeted.
The Locke Foundation asks the Labour Party to explain the origins of their student targeted mailing list.
