New Zealand Federation of Ethnic Councils
The Federation welcomes the possibility of schools presenting clearer reports for children and young people.
It is often very confusing for those parents who’s English is their second language to read and understand the reports
on their children sent home to them. Parents are not sure how well their children are achieving and what they can do to
assist.
However the Federation believes that it is essential that schools consult with families before making any changes.
“We would welcome being part of a consultation process” says Mr Narayanan president of the Federation of Ethnic
Councils. “We have lots to offer in the way of advice to schools in ensuring reports are written so they are easily
understood by all the community and not just those who’s English is their first language”
“Any changes made must be in the best interests of the children and their parents in assisting parents to support their
children’s progress through the education system”
“We look forward to the opportunity to participate in a full consultation process”
