Whitireia Park inland track to be upgraded
A rough section of the inland track at Whitireia Park in Titahi Bay is about to get a facelift.
Weather permitting, work will start on Wednesday (July 27) - from the Onepoto side of the park - to transform 1200
metres of slippery narrow track into an evenly-graded walkway with a metal surface.
While attempts will be made to keep the track open during the four to six week duration of the work, it may be necessary
to close it at times for safety reasons, Whitireia Park Board chairman Allan Ross said.
“There are a couple of places where explosives will have to be used.”
“We are asking visitors to the park to heed the signs and make their presence known to the contractors who will ensure
their safe passage through.”
The work is being undertaken by Wellington-based Tecnico Site Services Ltd and Trust Porirua has contributed a grant for
the project.
When the new track is completed, new bridges and board walks will be constructed.
“Whitireia Park is a very popular recreational area and it’s important that we have good quality facilities in place,”
Mr Ross said.
“The board is very appreciative of the help provided by Trust Porirua.”
He reminded the public that off road vehicles and motor bikes were not permitted in the park, nor was the lighting of
fires. People also needed to take their rubbish with them when they left the park.
