Record Income For Save The Children New Zealand
Save the Children New Zealand announced today a record income of over $10 million for 2004/05 at its 57th Annual General Meeting in Wellington.
President of the organisation Martin Hawes thanked Save the Children New Zealand supporters, volunteers and the New Zealand Government for contributing to the sum, which represents a 12% increase over the organisation’s revenue of $9 million in 2003/04. The New Zealand Government alone contributed $5.2 million towards this result.
“I am delighted to say that Save the Children New Zealand is continuing to make a real difference to the lives of children in over 20 countries,” said Mr Hawes. “It is our role to continue the fight for children’s rights and keep this enormous challenge in the hearts and minds of everyone who can bring about positive change.” Chair of the International Save the Children Alliance, Barry Clarke, congratulated Save the Children New Zealand in his keynote address.
“Save the Children New Zealand is making a valuable contribution towards the Millennium Development Goals, particularly in the fields of health and education,” said Mr Clarke. “In the last year, Save the Children New Zealand’s 400 trained and resourced Village Health Volunteers in Papua New Guinea delivered over 60,000 essential medical consultations to children and their families in remote villages of the East Sepik Province. In Southern India, 5000 children attended special coaching classes, improved government schools and children’s centres as a direct result of Save the Children New Zealand’s development work with their local partner.”
“These are exactly the types of interventions that help children in developing countries to break out of the cycle of poverty into which they are born.”
Save the Children New Zealand funds over 44 sustainable development projects offshore, the majority of which are long-term projects, in addition to providing emergency assistance and managing a domestic programme.
