Global Walk To End Child Hunger
Wellington will kick-start the global ‘Walk the World’ campaign to raise money to transform the lives of the world’s
poorest children by hosting a 5 kilometre sponsored walk starting from Civic Square at 12pm on Sunday 12 June.
Wellingtonians will be teaming up with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and more than 200,000 people around
the world to join in the battle against child hunger. Last year’s campaign raised enough money to fund meals for more
than 30,000 school children in the developing world. This year, ‘Fight Hunger: Walk the World’ aims to raise more than 4
million dollars.
In over 200 cities worldwide, the event will remind people that in a world that produces more than enough food for
everyone, some 18,000 children die of hunger daily. Another 300 million children suffer chronic hunger; 100 million do
not attend school.
‘Walk the World’ starts at 12pm at Civic Square and moves around the waterfront to Oriental Bay. Participants are
encouraged to register for the walk on the http://www.fighthunger.org/ website. Those unable to participate in the walk can still contribute by simply visiting the website – each time
someone visits the site for the first time, and enters their email address, TNT will donate 19 US cents – the cost of
feeding a child for one day – to the campaign.
