Christian Heritage NZ will seek Civil Unions repeal
Christian Heritage NZ will seek the repeal of the Civil Unions legislation if elected to Parliament this year. As part
of its recently released package of key policies to affirm marriage, the party noted that it would seek parliamentary
support for the repeal of the Civil Unions legislation to ensure the social significance of marriage is not undermined.
CHNZ leader Ewen McQueen said it was important that the new parliament be given an opportunity to reverse the Act as
soon as possible. CHNZ would do what it could to create that opportunity, either by a member’s bill or as part of a
confidence and supply agreement. McQueen stated,
“We are not going to stand by and let civil unions become an accepted part of the New Zealand cultural and moral
landscape. As well as giving official sanction to homosexuality, this legislation undermines what marriage has
represented for centuries. It creates an alternative relationship form with the same legal status but without the same
cultural connotations of love, faithfulness and lifelong commitment between a husband and wife. Those are the virtues
that are will restore family life in New Zealand – not the liberal-permissive values being promoted by this Government.”
