Wealthy ANZ Treats Kiwi Staff Like Second-Class Citizens
The ANZ bank should stop treating its New Zealand workers like second-class citizens and pay them properly after
announcing a $306 million profit from its NZ operation, Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson said today.
The Australasian bank made a total profit of A$1.5 billion for the six months to March, up from A$1.4 billion in the
same period a year earlier.
Bank staff who are members of the union, Finsec, recently took industrial action over their stalled pay talks. They are
seeking pay parity with their Australian counterparts who get extra pay for working evenings and weekends.
“Workers are standing up to a multinational bank that takes its profits offshore and treats its New Zealander workers
like second-class citizens,” Ross Wilson said.
“This bank can afford to be a decent employer, pay its staff fairly and respect their reasonable demands for
compensation for weekend work.”
