Kiwi Protestors will Die-In at Solid Energy Conference: "Green" Coal? Yeah Right!
On Friday morning at 8:15 kiwi will protest against Solid Energy's sponsorship of a Sustainability conference being held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Christchurch. Mark Pizey, of Solid Energy, is speaking at the "Working on the Frontier: Environmental Sustainability in Practice" conference at 9:30 this morning. Save Happy Valley Protestors dressed as kiwi will 'die' in front of participants as they enter the foyer. Conference participants will be given complementary "green coal."
Mark Pizey's talk is entitled "Measuring Environmental Impacts: A Mining Industry perspective". However, coal is not sustainable! Solid Energy does not belong at a green conference. The protestors will be high-lighting this attempt by Solid Energy to green-wash itself.
Friday is April Fools Day, and we are fools if we believe Mark Pizey and Solid Energy. Coal is a contributor to climate change, it can cause acid rain, acid mine drainage and massive environmental damage. Solid Energy's proposed open-cast mine at Happy Valley on the West Coast will also destroy habitat of the great spotted kiwi and the Powelliphanta "patrickensis" snail.
The conference is being run by Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (eianz) has been going since Tuesday 29th March.
The Save Happy Valley Campaign also opposed to Solid Energy's mine due to concerns about:
Water pollution
Loss of biodiversity
Destruction of trees
