Women Workers Fight for a Fair Share
Winning their fair share of the benefits of economic growth is not only about a pay rise for many women workers – it is
also about pay and employment equity and work-life balance, Council of Trade Unions secretary Carol Beaumont said today.
Tomorrow is International Women’s Day and Carol Beaumont called on women in the paid workforce to get more active in
union campaigns to improve their pay and working conditions.
Many women workers, struggling to juggle family and other responsibilities with paid work, continued to be under-valued
and over-represented in low-paid and part-time work.
“Getting their fair share means valuing the work women do, to make it possible for them to earn a decent living and
still meet their family responsibilities,” she said.
Unions continued to fight for pay and employment equity, better work-life balance provisions and improved paid parental
leave.
“The way to win these improvements is by collective bargaining through a union and the CTU urges women workers to get
their voices heard in their unions and push for a better deal for them and their families,” Carol Beaumont said.
