In May 2003 War on Want and Justice for Colombia took 4 teachers and higher education workers to Colombia. In a country
in which more trade unionists are murdered each year than in the rest of the world put together, teachers and lecturers
are the most targeted group of workers - accounting for nearly half of all those killed. "The horrors we learnt about
shocked us deeply, while the bravery of those we met has left us with memories which we will carry for the rest of our
lives".
In the last decade 1,535 people have been killed as a result of their involvement in trade union activity. Not only does
this severely undermine democracy but it also means thousands of workers are forced to live in poverty. Colombia is one
of the most unequal societies on earth with 3% of the population owning 70% of the land. Mayday Colombia is a video
produced by War on Want that records the plight trade unionists in Colombia are in and documents their efforts to
continue their work in the interests of the workers they represent.
