Activists re-commission gun emplacement
In a lightning action, two activists calling themselves Mr. Cole and Mr. Black, stormed the gun emplacement at Whangarei
Heads today.
"They want to refire the power station," Mr. Cole said, "So we're going to refire the gun."
"Straight at them," Mr. Black added.
The gun emplacement was originally erected at Whangarei Heads during the Second World War to protect Northlanders and
New Zealand as a whole from the threat of imperialist Japanese forces.
"And we think its time it went back up to protect Northlanders and all of New Zealand from the new forces that threaten
us," Mr. Black said.
The two activists were referring to the proposal by Mighty River Power to recommission the old oil-fired power station
at Marsden B as a coal-fired generation facility.
Hanging a banner from the wall of the emplacement and erecting a flag, the two aimed the gun at Marsden B and pulled a
string.
In silence a flag dropped from the muzzle of the cannon, the word "BANG" emblazoned on it.
"Did we get them?" Mr. Cole asked.
Mr. Black squinted into the sun.
"Not yet," he replied.
