MFAT Tsunami Update
* The number of confirmed deaths is TWO (see previous update re June Kander who holds Canadian citizenship). ONE remains in hospital (in India). There are FOUR people missing and now presumed to be deceased.
* There are currently no individuals who have been identified as warranting a concentrated effort to determine their whereabouts.
* The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is taking phone inquiries about New Zealanders of concern following the tsunami in South Asia. The number to call is 04 439 8000.
The database also has just over 200 other people who may have been in the region. Enquiries continue to be made to account for these people, but we don't have any particular concern for the majority of them. This number has reduced by nearly 100 over the weekend and we expect the figure to decrease significantly during the course of this week.
