Navy Patrol Craft Helps Stricken Yacht
The Navy Reserve Patrol Craft HMNZS Kiwi, last night (Saturday 15 January) went to the rescue of a stricken yacht in the Marlborough Sounds.
HMNZS Kiwi was taking part in the annual Naval Volunteer Reserve Exercise, when it went to the assistance of the yacht.
The 50 foot motor launch, Crescendo, which had engine troubles, was located at anchor in 15 meters of water north of Motorua Island in the Queen Charlotte Sound.
The wind was gusting 35 knots and the launch was just north of a dangerous underwater rock.
An officer and rating from HMNZS Kiwi boarded the launch and provided assistance to the distressed couple on board the Crescendo.
HMNZS Kiwi towed the yacht into Resolution Bay, before returning to the exercise.
