Holiday road toll 2nd lowest on record
The 2004/2005 holiday period has ended with a provisional figure of nine road deaths, down from 13 last year and the lowest figure for a holiday period since 1966/67, when nine people were also killed. The lowest holiday road toll on record is eight, recorded in 1959/60, while the deadliest holiday period was 1972/73, when 37 were killed. The official 2004/05 holiday period began at 1600 on Friday 24 December and ended at 0600 today (5 January).
