Change Needed To Attract Older Workers
Employers needed to make changes to the workplace to recruit and retain valuable and experienced older workers in paid
work, Council of Trade Unions secretary Carol Beaumont said today.
The Retirement Commissioner has said that older people are in better health and living longer and many expect to keep
working - either by choice or because of financial pressure.
The skill and labour shortage made it imperative that employers look to employing older workers, Carol Beaumont said.
“Older workers have experience that’s valuable to many employers - but most of these workers also want some balance
between work and the rest of their lives.
“Employers who pay fairly and who offer good conditions and flexibility in working time are likely to keep and attract
well-educated, highly-skilled older workers who are valuable not just for the work that they do but also the knowledge
they can pass on in the workplace.”
