Families Commission Appoints New Chief Executive
The Families Commission has appointed Claire Austin as its new Chief Executive, taking over from interim Chief Executive
Elizabeth Rowe, who was not an applicant for the role, and who will now return to her social policy contracting role.
Claire Austin has been the Chief Executive of the Royal College of General Practitioners for the past four years. Before
that she was the Chief Executive of Age Concern New Zealand. She will be responsible for leading the team who will carry
out the work programme on behalf of the Commission.
Chief Commissioner Rajen Prasad said the Commission is delighted to have a person of Claire Austin's ability as Chief
Executive.
"Claire will bring a solid background in advocacy and social issues, as well as management, leadership and commitment to
the family. Her experience in age-related issues will also be invaluable."
Dr Prasad also paid tribute to the transition staff who have helped establish the Families Commission. The Commission is
soon to release its work programme and focus for the rest of the financial year.
The Families Commission was established on 1 July 2004 to be an advocate for New Zealand families. Its role is to
promote better understanding of family issues and needs amongst government agencies and in the wider community, and to
encourage and inform public debate about families.
