Unions Celebrate Victory with New Law
Workers have something to celebrate over Labour Weekend after Parliament this week passed the amendments to the
Employment Relations Act into law, Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson said today.
The amendments contained in the Employment Relations Law Reform Bill will come into force on December 1.
The new law will promote collective bargaining and protect vulnerable workers in situations where their job is
transferred to another employer.
“The amendments uphold the role of unions as a voice for working people. All workers, not just union members, will
benefit from this change,” Ross Wilson said.
Unions are also celebrating a victory in the Holidays Act which came into force this year and sees those working on
Labour Day getting paid time and a half and also getting a day off in lieu.
