Canterbury Corporate Backscratch Awards
A group of concerned Cantabrians will be attending the Champion Canterbury Awards at 6:30pm on Thursday October 23rd to
stage a protest against capitalism.
The group will hold the "Canterbury Corporate Backscratch Awards" outside the Convention Center. This will be a loud,
colorful ceremony that highlights just what a farce the "champion" awards really are. They believe that nobody should be
awarded for exploiting, and making profit from the community, animals and the environment.
Some companies have been selected by the group to receive there own special awards. These are:
Crop and Food - The Bio-Hazard Award "Crop and Food are polluting our environment with genetically modified organisms.
This is an extreme risk to the future of Aotearoa. Since GE technology is unknown and unwanted, Crop and Food will be
presented with the Bio-Hazard award," explains Tim Dunne.
Solid Energy - The Eco-Terrorist Award "Solid Energy is destroying large amounts of the west coast environment in their
quest for coal. They play a major part in global warming. Next year Solid Energy plan to expand their operation to Happy
Valley, a home to giant spotted kiwi and the rare Powelliphanta patrickensis snail. For these reasons and more, Solid
Energy will be presented with the Eco-Terrorist Award." The Cancer Society - The Animal Torture Award "With scientific
evidence showing research from animals cannot be extrapolated to humans and even their own directors admitting so, you
have to wonder why the cancer society continues to waste public funds on animal testing. This needless torture of
animals is why the Cancer Society will receive the Animal Torture Award."
