Campaign for Civil Unions to stay away from Destiny rally
The Campaign for Civil Unions will not attend the Destiny Church rally taking place next Monday (August 23) at
Parliament, says the campaign spokesperson Jeremy Lambert.
“The turn-out for their Auckland rally was low and we have decided to focus our resources on more useful activities,”
says Jeremy Lambert.
The Campaign for Civil Unions will conduct an information briefing for media after the rally at St Andrew’s on The
Terrace church. The media briefing will start at 2.00pm.
Whilst the Campaign will not formally be present at the Destiny rally, key campaign organisers will be available to
support the organisations and individuals who are expected to attend.
“Wellington has a large number of people who are concerned with the fight for civil rights. These people are not just
from the gay and lesbian communities, but include unions, student groups and religious organisations”, says Jeremy
Lambert.
The Campaign is particularly concerned about the Destiny Church and Maxim Institute tactic of using children to advocate
against the bill and to support homophobia.
“We are concerned that the Destiny Church use children at their rallies, exposing vulnerable youth to an aggressive
environment created by adults. Similarly the Maxim Institute has developed form letters for children to sign and send to
Members of Parliament”, he says. “The campaign believes children are far too valuable to be used as part of a political
tactic and that this is certainly not the best way to strengthen families.”
The Campaign for Civil Unions media briefing will take place at St Andrew’s on The Terrace (30 The Terrace) at 2.00pm.
