Transport sector should benefit from changes
Although much of the detail is still to be decided, New Zealanders stand to benefit from the changes to the transport
sector announced today, PSA national secretary Paul Cochrane said.
“The PSA contributed to the review of the sector and we conveyed the concerns, experiences, and ideas of our members
working in those organisations. Overall, PSA members thought some sensible structural consolidation and strong
networking arrangements between organisations would greatly enhance the sector’s ability to deliver the government’s
transport strategy by 2010.”
While the announcements reflect our position at a high level, questions remain whether the changes announced go far
enough - in particular whether there is sufficient incentive for organisations to work together to deliver on the
transport strategy.
The changes are about building a strong and responsive transport sector. We expect therefore retaining the skills and
expertise which exist within the sector will be key.
Paul Cochrane said the PSA would be involved in the next phase of developments of the review and would again be
consulting members on their expectations.
“We have called a meeting of delegates next week to discuss the announcement and the implications for them. We will also
be planning our involvement over the coming months.”
Paul Cochrane said the PSA, on behalf of its members, was pleased that months of speculation about the review outcome
was over.
