Farmers Welcome Trade Funding Boost
Farmers welcome more money being spent on enhancing resources to improve New Zealand’s trade prospects with key export markets, says Tom Lambie, President of Federated Farmers of New Zealand (FFNZ).
Mr Lambie was responding to an announcement by the Minister of Trade Negotiations, Hon Jim Sutton, that the Government would commit a total $2.5m of extra funding towards trade negotiations this year and next year.
“The Minister’s announcement is a welcome and necessary move by the government if we are to make any gains in improved market access. New Zealand agriculture is reliant now and in future on additional trade access. No stone should be left unturned to achieve that outcome," Mr Lambie said.
“Federated Farmers hopes to see the additional trade funding secure improved access to key markets, the removal of trade barriers and ultimately enable New Zealand exporters to achieve the higher returns they have long been denied,” he said.
"The Federation has long called on the government to boost resources for this vital ingredient in supporting New Zealand's economic growth."
