Salvation Army Week Underway
Thousands of collectors are out in force around the country as Salvation Army Week gets underway.
The Salvation Army’s annual appeal, which runs from Monday, April 26 to Sunday May 2, helps to support people in need
through programmes such as family services, budgeting advice, addiction services, counselling and family tracing.
Idol star Guy Sebastian has lent his support to the appeal with his hit song ‘Angels Brought Me Here’ being used as the
theme song. The appeal aims to raise over $1 million to help Kiwis in need.
Salvation Army spokesman Major David Bennett said that collectors wearing bright jackets and toting large collecting
buckets displaying the Red Shield can be found in malls, stores and on streets throughout the country. An enterprising
team of volunteer collectors in Dunedin appealed to fans attending the Highlanders versus Hurricanes match at Carisbrook
on Saturday.
‘If for some reason people do not see a collector, there are plenty of other ways they can show their support for Kiwis
in need,’ said Major Bennett.
He said that people can donate by using the reply-paid envelopes distributed with major newspapers this week. People
could also use their credit card to donate via The Salvation Army’s freephone 0800 53 00 00 or online at
www.salvationarmy.org.nz.
Major Bennett said that the appeal target would represent a significant contribution to The Salvation Army’s social and
family programmes that help more than 200,000 people in New Zealand each year.
