Israeli whistleblower freed from prison, but not yet a free citizen
Mordechai Vanunu is one of the world’s most important political prisoners. Imprisoned for revealing the existence of
more than 200 Israeli thermonuclear weapons, an act of public interest whistle blowing, he was kidnapped (a terrorist
act) by MOSSAD, tried in secret (illegal under international law) and sentenced to 18 years in prison. 11 ½ years were
spent in solitary confinement.
In an effort by the Israeli government to further silence him, on the eve of his release (April 21 2004), the long
imprisoned nuclear whistle blower has been barred from travel within or outside of Israel and from all contact with
foreigners. "Such restrictions are outrageous and illegal and not fitting for a democratic nation. Indeed the Israeli
Committee for Mordechai Vanunu has described them as ‘Nazi in nature’" said spokesperson Moana Cole.
"Mordechai Vanunu’s imprisonment reminded the world of the hypocrisy of the US, UK and Australia who waged a war against
Iraq for housing weapons of mass destruction but did not acknowledge the plight of Mordechai Vanunu".
Mordechai Vanunu has been a beacon of light for those who participate in the struggle by humanity to overcome the
addiction to nuclear weapons. In his final statement before his release, he writes: "We've succeeded in overcoming this
long time of silence. Thanks to all the campaigners and supporters in many states. You were my voice, my conscience -
you kept all these issues of secret nuclear weapons in the centre and followed my path. Very soon I'll be free. I'll be
glad to meet you and to share with you my experiences, my views and work to continue that first act - for the abolition
of nuclear weapons in all the world [several words censored out of the letter]. That is our mission and future target.
We'll not rest until we see a new international agreement to ban, abolish all kinds of nuclear weapons. Thank you for
all the help and encouragement you sent me for the past 18 years. The reward you will get is to see me free, alive and
very firm, strong in our way for peace and for the aboliti
