On behalf of the Tautoko Màori Trust, it gives me very great pleasure to welcome you to this first Tuhono e-pànui.
Like many others, you may know your iwi, but does your iwi know you? Tuhono is a national intiative to connect you to
your iwi. It is now only six weeks (3 May) before the Chief Registrar of Electors sends out consent and iwi affiliation
forms to the +360,000 Màori registered on the General and Màori Electoral rolls.
The success of the Tuhono campaign - asking registered Màori voters to allow their electoral details to be used to link,
confirm and update registration with their iwi through Tuhono, the central Màori Affiliation Service - goes way beyond
developing the membership of iwi registers.
Potentially, Tuhono will have a significant impact in promoting awareness and participation in the cultural, social and
economic wellbeing of all Màori into the future.
Tuhono will: Provide vital links between individual Màori and their iwi organisations that represent the collective
interests of the iwi.
Help iwi organisations to develop and maintain accurate and up-to-date membership registers.
Assist iwi and other Màori organisations develop strong, inclusive, effective and accountable governance structures.
Therefore this places a huge burden of responsibility on all of us to ensure that the Tuhono campaign is a success.
We urge you all to give this kaupapa your strongest possible support.
