Bomb explosions in Madrid
1. There is so far no indication of any deaths or injuries involving New Zealanders.
2. Around 80 NZ families or individuals living or staying in and around Madrid are registered with the NZ Embassy in Madrid.
3. NZ Embassy staff have been ringing or emailing people on the list and at 10am today NZ time had received responses from around two thirds. All were ok. The Embassy is continuing to make contact with those NZers who have not yet responded to email and phone messages.
4. Casualty information from the Spanish authorities and from the British and US Embassies (which have been making hospital checks) has so far revealed no NZ names.
5. The NZ hockey team, currently in Madrid for Olympic qualifying, are all fine.
6. NZ Embassy staff are safe and well.
7. Anyone with concerns about a friend or relative in Madrid should call the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ph 04 439 8000, so enquiries can be made in Spain.
8. The Spanish Red Cross/Red Crescent also has an enquiries number: 0034 91 335 4682 (24 hours)
9. The NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade travel advisory for Spain remains appropropriate. It advises that there is some risk of terrorism in Spain and travellers should exercise caution and be security conscious. The Ministry is keeping the travel advisory situation under review.
