Employment Relations law changes
PSA welcomes the changes to the Employment Relations Act proposed by the Employment Relations Law Reform Bill, as the
Act in its original form needs to be strengthened, PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff said today.
“While the fundamental intentions of the Act have proven to be successful, there is a need to strengthen the original
legislation because, despite the intent of the Act to encourage collective bargaining and good faith, some employers
have tried to get around it.
“PSA has experience with organisations who have stalled in bargaining and refused to work within the spirit of the Act.
The new requirement for a collective agreement to be reached once bargaining has begun should help prevent that
happening.”
Richard Wagstaff said the Bill will build on the positive results which have been achieved by the Employment Relations
Act, but the PSA would like to see it go further.
“The PSA still has concerns around non-union members being able to reap the benefits of the hard work of union members.”
PSA will examine the legislation carefully and participate in the select committee process to try and achieve the best
possible outcome for its’ members.
