Demonstration at CTU conference today
I am Union and I am AGAINST Labour's Wars
Union members will be greeting Prime Minister Helen Clark today outside of the Council of Trade Unions conference at the Michael Fowler Centre at 11:15 today to protest the deployment of NZ troops to Iraq and Afghanistan.
'Unemployment is Iraq is a major problem now that the country has been destroyed by coalition forces and thousands of former Iraqi soldiers have been discharged from their duties. Meanwhile, the USA has decided to privatise whole sectors of the economy and auction it off to multinational corporations. This is without any consent from the Iraqi people.' said Peace Action Wellington member Valerie Morse
'Helen Clark has sent military engineers to assist in the so-called 're-construction' of the country. But we must ask, if the whole country is being sold-off, who are we helping - the Iraqi people or giant multinational corporations? If the people of Iraq need jobs, why are our engineers being sent to build roads and other infrastructure?'
'I am a Union member and I am here in solidarity with workers around the world who are being exploited by economic policies which sell off assets that belong to the people. This precisely what happened to New Zealand during the era of Rogernomics in the 1980s.'
