Seeds From Christchurch To Join Nationwide Hikoi
Representatives from GE Free Canterbury will present seeds from the Southern Seed Exchange and others to the Seed
Carriers Hikoi on Wednesday 22 October, at 8 am outside Canterbury Museum.
Seeds have been sent from Invercargill, Gore and Riverton to Dunedin. Dunedin's seeds were presented to the city's
Mayor, Sukhi Turner, by children at the GE Free March on 11 October. On Tuesday 21 October, the Dunedin Coalition for a
GE Free Environment embarked with these seeds on a journey northward, collecting seeds from Oamaru, Timaru, and the West
Coast. On Wednesday 22nd October, seeds will be collected from Christchurch, Kaikoura and joining Nelson in Blenhiem at
about 2pm in a walking / biking finale to Picton.
On the night of the 22nd the Hikoi, will have a symbolic meeting of unity with the North Island Hikoi at Tapu Te Ranga
Marae in Wellington. At dawn Thursday 23rd, we march to Parliament as a combined New Zealand Wide Hikoi. The seeds will
be presented to Minister for the Environment Marian Hobbs at 9 am, in a heart-felt ceremony of concern asking the
government for protection of these precious gems.
