Eat those Greens
Libertarianz Spokesman for Health Deregulation Dr. Richard Goode has commended the Green Party for their Children's Food
Awards initiative. "It is seldom that the Greens have anything to say that has both political and scientific merit,"
said Goode, "and ironic that when they do, they get dumped on by the likes of the New Zealand Dietetic Association and
the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation."
The Greens recommend eating 'good' foods, such as seasonal fruit and vegetables, and advise against consuming 'bad'
foods, such as sugary breakfast cereals and carbonated soft drinks. "From a nutritional point of view, this is much
better advice than the Nutrition Foundation's dumbed-down recommendation of 'variety, moderation, balance and
enjoyment', said Goode.
"Nutritionists have been promoting their so-called 'healthy eating messages' for years now, with as much success in
curbing the rising epidemic of obesity as prohibitionists have had in curbing recreational drug use - none at all!"
But Goode issued a warning to the Green Party: "Don't take your healthy eating campaign any further. Persuasion is one
thing, and legislating good eating is another. Thanks for the dietary advice, but don't try to tax or legislate junk
food off the menu. Some of us enjoy eating nutritionally worthless junk food, and what we choose to put in our bodies or
serve up at the family dinner table is our business - not yours."
Dr. Goode issued his own libertarian dietary advice: "Exercise your individual freedom and eat whatever the hell you
like, but accept personal responsibility for the health consequences of your choices." And he added, "Eat greens, but
don't vote for them - even in moderation!"
